Unusual place names are landmarks in Dominic Greyer’s early life. Many childhood holidays were spent in the beautiful Cumbrian hamlet of Boot. In Dom’s later youth, on a school trip through Denmark, the town of Middelfart lodged in his teen mind.
Then, as a student, something occurred that was to change the course of Dom’s life: he landed a summer job that required him to calculate the distances of British villages from their nearest train stations.
As he studied the maps, an excellent diversion emerged: collecting unusual place names. Wigwig, Pity Me and Ventongimps were early standouts.
Dom became so involved in the diversion, he was swiftly demoted to counting passengers getting off and on the W7 bus.
But, no matter. Dom now had a journey in mind. A mission. He would one day tour Britain, photographing every odd, incongruous and bizarre place name that he could track down.
This was the road that led Far from Dull… and beyond.
